My Favorite Things – January Edition

You know when you find those products that make your heart happy? The ones where you want to tell everyone they need it? The things that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, especially on a snowy and bitter cold January day? I’m going to share a few of my favorite things with you each month in hopes to bring you that same feeling. So, without further ado, let’s get sharing!

  1. Capital Gaines by Chip Gaines. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to those who know me. I so badly want to fly to Waco and visit the Silos. Fixer Upper is one of my favorite shows. I’m first in line when the quarterly issue of Magnolia Journal is released. My sister recently gifted a subscription to me for Christmas so now it will come straight to my mailbox! Squeal! I own and read their first book, The Magnolia Story. I can’t wait for Jo’s recipe book to come out in April and her design book and Behind the Design on HGTV and…….well I could go on and on. My husband bought Chip’s book for me for Christmas because he knows how much I love them. I wanted the book, but I really didn’t think it would be as good as it was. I thought it would be full of exactly what the title says; stupid things Chip has done; a good laugh. While he does speak of a few not-so-clever scenarios he’s been apart of, this book is full of heart-warming stories, inspiration built around scripture, and a humble account of a man who acts as a coach to push us all to go for what we want in life. It’s a quick and easy read and the perfect way to begin the new year. Thanks Chip! I could read this one over and over again and get something new out of it every time.
  2. We Bought A Zoo. Yes. That movie starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson that was released like 15 years ago. Okay, not 15 years ago, 2011. What took me so long to watch this movie?! This of course stems off of a reference to it in Chip’s book above. The fact that we’ve had an extended winter break with snow days led my kids and I to rent a few  movies and what a great movie! Again, full of inspiration, comedy, sadness and courage. A heart wrenching, feel-good movie that I already ended up buying because we loved it so much.
  3. Jillian Michaels Body Revolution Jillian Michaels used to scare me. She’s always yelling at people who she’s encouraging to become their better selves. Interesting. I really thought she would come out of the screen and yell at me! I never imagined I could make it through any of her workouts. One little visit to my parents house and I found 3 of Jillian’s workout DVDs on my mom’s bookshelf. I asked her if I could borrow them and I. FELL. IN. LOVE. It was a season in life where my daughter was in school all day, my son had just started preschool and I had a few hours to myself 3 days a week. It was time to get my pre-baby body back darn it! I’ve never found a workout or instructor who makes me want to come back for more. I discovered her “yelling” isn’t yelling at all. It’s her instructing you, pushing you, encouraging you because she wants you to succeed. She wants you to look and feel good. She provides modifications if you need them and advanced moves as you’re getting better. She gives you several workouts with different levels, advancing as you improve. It isn’t just one workout on one disc, it’s several workouts in one. A good bang for your buck and most of her workouts are an average of 30 minutes and offer results. SCORE for those with tight schedules! I remember sitting at the pool with a few friends three years ago in my old, stretched out “tankini.” I looked at them and said, “Next year, I’ll be in a bikini just like that cute little 20 year old over there.” Guess what I was wearing that next summer and the summer after? Yep! And it felt AMAZING. I’ve literally cried after a few of her workouts, not because I was tired, but because I did it (okay fine and because I was tired.) Because I got to that third and final level. Because I was doing advanced moves on that level and because, as you’ll find in true Jillian fashion, after she rips you in more ways than one, at the end she provides you with an escape; an escape with one of her awe-inspiring, motivational speeches that leaves you proud, determined and ready to come back for more. After a 3-1/2 month hiatus due to a pinched nerve in my neck and several visits to the chiropractor, I’m finally ready to get back on track with this one! In fact, I think I’ll go do it right now!

    1. Oh no! She’s actually very witty and funny. There are some workouts where she isn’t as playful as others, but overall I find her very inspirational. I’d love to know which workouts of hers you’ve done if you get a minute to share! I guess she can’t be everyone’s cup of tea! And that’s okay. 😉
